Alumni Notes

Dear Honorary Commanders,

It is with a great sense of pride and privilege that I include remarks in this opening Honorary Commanders Association newsletter for the 2012 year. I have been truly blessed to come from a long lineage of those who have served, fought and died, and I view my participation in this program as a way to connect more closely to those generations before me to whom I reverently look up.

I am personally grateful to Pam Younker (’07 and Chair 2009-2011) for selflessly engaging as my mentor this last year. I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to serve the military community, Cobb Chamber, and you, the 2012 Honorary Commanders class and the many alumni who are emotionally invested in the affairs of our men and women who serve.

My admiration for those who stand and wear the uniform is infinite and my commitment to supporting their cause does not waiver. When asked to chair the HCA I was humbled at the prospect of doing so. I personally received much enrichment during my class year of 2009 and sincerely hope I can effectively be the torch-bearer of this unique and special program.

Honorary Commanders Making a Difference

Honorary Commanders salute the family of Pfc Jacob Dennis. In December, the Dennis family was welcomed in the White House to see the Gold Star Tree where their son and brother was honored.

Other Events

Honorary Commanders were invited to attend several events in December and January, including the following:

7 December: Honorary Commanders recently gathered for the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Georgia Department of Defense Joint Force Headquarters Building. The 220,500-square-foot facility is named in honor of World War II hero and coordinator of the Berlin Airlift, Gen. Lucius Clay. Clay was a Cobb County native. The event also celebrated the 375th National Guard Birthday.

10 December: Members of the Honorary Commanders Association participated in the Wreath Laying at Marietta National Cemetery, which is sponsored in our area by the Civil Air Patrol.
