Notes from the Chairs

In January, the class held their Government and Politics night. Former Governor Roy Barnes, Cobb County Commissioner Tim Lee (’04), County Manager David Hankerson (’87) , and Elections and Registration Director Sharon Dunn (’92) all spoke to the students. After each speaker, the students had to the opportunity to ask questions of our county leaders. Those who were eligible were even registered to vote!

February brought a new program to CYL. Community Involvement night premiered and was a huge hit! The class split into five groups and performed service projects for five community organizations: The Center for Family Resources, Keep Cobb Beautiful, YWCA, Reconnecting Families and MUST Ministries. The groups put together a presentation for a group and three judges that included, Robert Quigley (’01), Angela Shipp (’06) , and Ruth Evangelista. The judges voted on a winning team. Representatives from the organizations attended, including Jeri Barr (’86), The Center for Family Resources; Gwen Baldwin, Keep Cobb Beautiful; Holly Comer (’95), YWCA of Northwest Georgia; Juanita Stedman (’07), Reconnecting Families; and John Moeller (’03) from MUST Ministries were all present to hear the presentations and speak to the class.

The final event for the 2009-2010 class will be Spring Retreat this month. It will be held at Camp WinShape in Rome, GA. The students will complete their year with a ropes course led by the WinShape staff.
