Frequently asked questions:

What is the "Principal for a Day" program and who participates?
Cobb's business and community leaders will have the opportunity to shadow a Cobb County and Marietta City public school principal for a half day and observe the challenges and strengths of our education systems. The leader-to-leader dialogue that takes place on that day will enable participants to better understand each other and identify ways to help one another in partnerships.
The Cobb Chamber is seeking participants who have demonstrated an interest in the well-being of our schools, expertise that would benefit a school and the ability to leverage professional and personal resources and networks to support a school-based partnership.

What is the time commitment that day?
Participants will report to their assigned school before the first bell and stay for approximately a half day.

What happens on that day?
Since every school is unique, there is no prescription for what will happen. The principal and PFAD will collaboratively develop an agenda for the day. Below are activities that past participants have enjoyed:

  • Touring the school facilities
  • Delivering morning announcements
  • Having breakfast or lunch in the cafeteria with students and/or faculty
  • Visiting classrooms and participating in class discussions
  • Observing student performances, special events or presentations
  • Speaking to the class about a subject related to your business (with permission and advance notice)
  • Talking one-on-one with students
  • Greeting students in the halls
  • Attending team meetings
  • Learning about the school's AYP report and how it works
  • Learning about the school's improvement plans
  • Observing how the principal handles situations that arise
  • Hall duty
  • Teacher observations
  • Reading to a student or a classroom (elementary schools)
  • Sharing your occupation with the principal
  • End of the day discussion regarding the needs of the school and how your business/organization can help and continue your relationship

How will I be matched with a school?

The Cobb Chamber will identify a school that could most benefit from the skills, expertise and resources that you could offer, as outlined on your application. Your geographic proximity will also be taken into consideration.

Can I request a specific school?
You have the opportunity to indicate your top choices of school matches on your application. Although we try to accommodate specific requests, keep in mind that your selections may not necessarily lead to a match.
